Community Partnership: Bayshore Center At Bivalve

Recognizing the significance, authenticity and fragility of Southern New Jersey’s Bayshore Region, Bayshore Center at Bivalve inspires people to experience, embrace and protect its history, culture and environment. The Bayshore Center at Bivalve is home port to the A.J. Meerwald, a 1928 authentically restored oyster schooner and NJ’s Official Tall Ship, as well as home to the Delaware Bay Museum & Folklife Center, with exhibits showcasing the thriving oyster industry of the 1920’s through artifacts, oral histories, historic photos and much more. Also in Bivalve are the Flotsam and Jetsam Gift Shop for unique area crafts and sail themed items, the Bayshore Gallery, showcasing area artists from South Jersey each month, and the Oyster Cracker Café, specializing in homemade, locally sourced traditional fare. Century values South Jersey’s Bayshore Region and because we share the core values of serving the community through education, economic development, and social and environmental health, Century has strongly supported the Bayshore Center at Bivalve for over nine years.

BAY DAYS
Century is proud to serve as major sponsor of South Jersey’s largest maritime festival. This free event, attended by an estimated 7500 people each year, is designed to motivate people to take care of the history, culture, and environment of New Jersey’s Bayshore Region through education, preservation, and example.

KIDS ABOUT THE BAY
On October 1st and 2nd, over 700 5th graders from throughout Cumberland County descended upon the Bayshore Center at Bivalve’s Shipping Sheds to participate in Kids ABOUT the Bay – an annual program made possible by a grant from Century, that introduces children to the Delaware Bay, its environment, and its history. The students rotated around a variety of environmental, ecological, historical, and art-related stations that explored a wide range of interests from testing water quality, to bee keeping, to packing oysters and more. Activities included: dockside lessons aboard the historic AJ Meerwald, NJ’s Official Tall Ship, guided wetland hikes, Build-a-Boat and Rain Gutter Racing with recyclable and reused materials, and crafts and activities at the BCB’s historic waterfront Bivalve Center.

Century is also pleased to provide:

  • Scholarship funding for children in low income areas to participate in paid programs and camps.
  • Sponsorship of OysterFest – the Center’s largest annual fundraiser, which enables them to increase their community outreach and expand education programs.
  • Annual donations to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort – to aid the implementation of the Bayshore Recovery Plan.
